Dance Recital Delights
by EDWARD CAMP, Staff Writer
The “Shall We Dance” dance club held their Summer Revue on August 7th at the Moreno Valley High School in Angel Fire. The dancers, who ranged in age from Pre-School to post-retired, had worked for up to a year on the afternoon’s performance, and it showed!
The styles ranged from classic Broadway (“42nd Street,” “Puttin’ on The Ritz,” “Broadway Baby”) to ballet (“Waltz of the Flowers”) to movie musicals (“Singin’ in the Rain,” “Grease”) to patriotic numbers (“Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Proud to Be an American”). A selection of 1950’s Rock ‘n’ Roll numbers (“Tequila,” “Rockin’ Robin”) were featured along with a hula hoop demonstration by group director and dance teacher Diane Peterson. And of course, what dance revue in New Mexico would be complete without the Mexican Hat Dance?
Diane Peterson, a native of Chicago, Illinois and a graduate of the Joffrey School of Ballet in NYC, taught dance for over 20 years in Grayslake, Illinois at her own studio, the Dance Connection, before moving to Angel Fire in 2006. She founded the Shall We Dance club in 2008 to continue sharing her passion and expertise with people of all ages. In her 70’s, she has the energy and enthusiasm of some half her age. And she can still hula with the best of them!
